HOW TO LEARN ALL 15 SCALES IN ONE DAY!
Step 1: Slowly speak the musical alphabet forward and reverse starting & ending on the letter of the scale. Remember that the bottom and top note must be the SAME letter. You are not allowed to skip any letters of the alphabet or repeat any letters consecutively! For a D major scale you would speak... "D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D-C-B-A-G-F-E-D".
Step 2: Slowly speak the musical alphabet forward and reverse starting & ending on the letter of the scale but now include the required sharps or flats. Use your CIRCLE OF 4TH’s sheet to check which letters have a sharp or a flat. Remember, a scale can ONLY have sharps OR flats. It can not have both. Example - For a D Major Scale (2 sharps) your would speak… "D-E-F#-G-A-B-C#-D-C#-B-A-G-F#-E-D".
Step 3: Slowly spell the scale forward and reverse while fingering each note.... If you forget a fingering, use your fingering chart from your binder or the Circle of 4ths sheet (notes in the same column on your circle sheet are fingered the same).
Step 4: Slowly spell the scale (in your mind) while fingering your instrument and playing/blowing air through instrument. If your spell correctly in your mind, your fingers will be error free! If you made a mistake it was your mind's fault. Go back to the previous step!
Step 5: Spell (in your mind), finger and play your instrument while reading the notes with your eyes from you scale sheet. Click HERE if you need another scale sheet (scroll down for your specific instrument).
Important: Whenever you mess up, go back to the previous step!
Once you start to feel comfortable with a few scales proceed to practicing multiple scales in a row without stopping! You will soon be able to play all 15 scales without stopping... WELCOME TO THE GRAND MASTER SCALE!
